For as long as I can remember, I've loved helping people learn the saxophone.
For 20 years I taught children in schools to play the saxophone, so I know a thing or two about breaking down tough-to-grasp concepts in ways that literally anyone can understand.
30 years ago I did my 1st professional gig as a performer and in 2000 I taught my 1st saxophone lesson. I've spent the last 23 years honing and developing my teaching skills, working with pupils aged from 8-80 years old.

Will the site stay the same or will it be added to?
There's everything there to get you started and keep you busy and developing for a long time, but the plan is to add more.
For example, originally there was 1 module focussed on getting started and I have recently added a 2nd module taking you a significant step further into reading music and giving you an original series of study and performance pieces to practice and play.
Module 3 has also been added which is an easy to use and eminently achievable exploration of getting started with improvisation on the saxophone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this for all saxophones?
Yes. Videos & resources are provided in both Bb and Eb - this covers soprano, alto, tenor, baritone saxophones.
Can I read the lessons as well as watch videos?
Yes. There are written notes that accompany each lesson.
I have no musical knowledge, does that matter?
No. You'll be told everything that you need to know, exactly when you need to know it. No prior musical knowledge is needed.
I really want to learn to read music, will you teach that?
Yes. Learning to read music is the main focus of Module 2. It's taught in a step by step way so that it'll make sense to everyone.
I want to learn to improvise, will you teach that?
Yes. Improvisation is an integral part of the lessons from very early on in the journey. Improvisation on saxophone doesn't need to be complicated, I'll show you a really simple way to do it. And when you get to Module 3 there's a much more focussed look at improvising that I know you're going to love!
Do I need a saxophone?
Yes. You could get started watching some videos if you've ordered one and it's on it's way, but all of the lessons are designed to show you how to use the instrument, so you need one :)
When are the Live video sessions?
There's a weekly check in on Tuesdays at 6:45pm-7:15pm BST, or GMT, depending on the time of year - basically in the UK time zone. The video sessions are programmed to fit in with the UK school term time; the schedule for the year is mapped out so you can see exactly when they are. Then once a month on a Monday evening 7:30pm-8:30pm there's a Live Masterclass.
I'm enrolled, what happens next?
Hurray - welcome to Learn Saxophone with Matthew Smith! You'll soon receive an email from my course platform provider (Circle) directing you to the inside of the site. Once there, you can say "hello" to the community and me, Matthew, then also access the courses and resources that you have bought.
